CUERO — The Smithville High School varsity football squad is looking to bounce back from a lopsided 69-28 loss on the road Oct. 27 against the Gobblers of Cuero High School, who are now undefeated at 9-0 and currently ranked as the No. 4 team in 4A-2.
In order for the Tigers under Head Coach Cyril Adkins to make the playoffs out of 4A-2 District 12, a few things need to happen in their favor. First, Smithville (2-7 overall, 1-3 in district) needs to handle business Nov. 3 at home against winless Caldwell High School and pull out a victory over the Hornets. Caldwell has struggled mightily this season to get anything going, especially on offense as the Hornets have scored just 101 points through nine games.
The Tigers are also going to need some help in other games as Smithville should be able to clinch a playoff spot with a win and Giddings High School must also lose at home to Gonzales High School. The Giddings Buffaloes enter the week with a 3-6 record and 2-2 mark in district play. However, with a Smithville victory and Giddings loss, both teams would have a 2-3 district mark and the Tigers would have the tiebreaker thanks to a thrilling 35-34 comeback win on the road Oct. 13 over the Buffaloes. Smithville rallied from two separate 20-point deficits in the game to beat Giddings.
If the Tigers sneak into the playoffs with just a 3-7 record, they would likely have to play Waco Connally High School in the bi-district round of the playoffs next week.
