Simple Promise Farms hosted their third annual Hot Sauce Hootenanny this past weekend, drawing hundreds looking to get a taste of some heat or simply enjoy a trueto- Texas community gathering.
Rows of homemade sauces with different heat levels, ingredients and textures had the judges writing down pages of notes with their chili-shaped pens.
A good sauce should be balanced, all of salty, sour and sweet, according to local judge Stef Finley, friend of the farm and owner of the Smash Daddies food truck.
Heat and flavor must be true to their name as well, matching what the sauce claims to be.
“When these come together, if they don’t compete against each other, that’s the magic,” said Finley.
Jon Mallen, with Driftwood Recovery, won best overall sauce for his chili lemon vinegar recipe. He will have his sauce featured in a limited production run, to be sold at the Simple Promise Farms market stand.
Adam Tauk, of Temple’s Chef Flaco’s Salsa, earned both the people’s choice award and booty burner prize for his smoked onion chipotle and garlic bacon reaper concoctions.
Sponsored by Ranch House Recovery, proceeds from the event will go back into the community, supporting local individuals recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. Simple Promise Farms has helped countless residents in the recovery community, providing scholarships for those seeking to make a positive life change and assisting people with sober living and mental health issues.
The whole family friendly event encapsulated this positive living, with attendees from across the county enjoying music, dance, games and overall good times together.
