BASTROP – Bastrop 552, the nearly 550-acre film studio announced in 2021, has gone through some changes in its development, but is still on track to open late 2024 or early 2025.
By substituting the original concrete structures for cheaper, pre-engineered metal buildings, plans have been altered and costs have been reduced to around $50 million, according to Line 204 Studios CEO Alton Butler, the team behind the complex’s development.
Butler expects full construction on the project to begin by December of this year.
“I love the way it looks. To me it fits the project better. It looks like a barn, and to me it fits the country vibe,” said Butler in a recent interview with Austin Business Journal. “I love it here. We are where we should be.”
Site plans include six studios, two sound stages, a warehouse with mill space and a head office building.
Estimations suggest that the studio could reach over $170 million generated each year, as well as $64 million in household income with the 1,400 permanent jobs it will be bringing to the table. On top of that, several million will be fed back into the community through local taxes.
“If we were done today, we would be full,” added Butler in the same interview, with around $150 million already committed from vendors.
While not quite as large as the multi-billion-dollar facilities of Tesla and the upcoming Samsung Austin Semiconductor, Bastrop 552 continues the trend of large-scale complexes branching out to the greater Austin area.
Bastrop County has already seen significant growth in its population and local businesses because of these studios, with no signs of slowing down.
