ROUND ROCK — Two Bastrop County cross country runners had the high honor Nov. 3 of competing in their respective classes at the 2023 UIL Cross Country State Championships held at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
Cedar Creek High School senior Alejandro Ruiz competed for the Eagles in the 5A boys’ 5,000-meter run, while McDade High School sophomore Summer Jacobs ran in the 1A girls’ two-mile run to represent the Lady Bulldogs.
For Ruiz, he completed a sensational career for Cedar Creek as the standout senior placed 13th with a time of 15:46.60 in a massive field of 150 boys runners who made it all the way to the 5A state meet. North Richland Hills senior Ethan Gonzalez was crowned the individual state champion for the 5A boys with a mark of 15:55.80, while Lucas Lovejoy High School was the 5A team state champion for both the boys and girls.
Jacobs capped off a promising march to the 1A girls state cross country meet as just a sophomore for McDade as she came in 123rd place out of 146 runners with a time of 15:05.30. Springlake Earth High School senior standout Taytum Goodman won her fourth consecutive individual 1A girls state championship with a mark of 11:20.10, while the Roby High School girls squad was crowned the 1A team state champions.
