WACO — The Elgin High School girls varsity basketball team came close to picking up its first win very early in the 2023-24 season as the Lady Wildcats traveled Nov. 11 to Waco High School and fell 39-27 to the 6A Lady Lions on the road.

Elgin was led against Waco by sophomore Trinity Martinez, who knocked down three shots from behind the arc for a team-high nine points and three rebounds in the Saturday afternoon loss. Lady Wildcats senior Keera Williams had eight points and three rebounds, while senior Jaylan Roberson and sophomore Sharmonique Williams each added five points of their own.

Elgin also played earlier in the week Tuesday, Nov. 7 in its first road game of the season against Manor High School and was defeated 70-37. Despite the lopsided loss, the Lady Wildcats were led in scoring on the night by Sharmonique Williams, who had a team-high 15 points against the Lady Mustangs. Elgin junior Brianna Penson had eight points, while Roberson had seven points to go along with nine rebounds and five steals on defense.

Under Elgin head coach Chris Tibbets, the Lady Wildcats (0-3) will have a golden opportunity Nov. 14 to pick up their first victory of the season at home versus Austin LBJ Early College High School for Pink Out. The Lady Wildcats’ varsity squad will then compete Nov. 16-18 as Elgin takes part in the Austin Crockett Tournament.
