AUSTIN — The Elgin High School boys varsity basketball team started off the 2023-24 regular season with a bang as the Wildcats traveled Saturday afternoon and ground out a 52-49 victory on the road over the Knights of Austin McCallum High School.
The Wildcats were led on the night by senior standout Nathen Lewis, who had a team-high 15 points with a pair of shots drained from behind the arc, four rebounds, one steal and one assist. Elgin junior Marcus Hickman added eight points and two steals of his own with a pair of three-pointers made, while sophomore Tyson McFarlin had four points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals in the win over McCallum.
This was a muchneeded victory for the Wildcats to start their season on the right foot against a tough McCallum squad that was coming off a 51-37 win over 6A Austin Anderson High School the previous night.
Elgin (1-0) will look to string some more victories together as the Wildcats will remain on the road Nov. 14 in a non-district road game against Taylor High School. The Wildcats will have their home opener this Friday night as Elgin hosts the Lions of Waco High School, host Jarrell High School Nov. 20 and then travel Nov. 21 to Bryan Rudder High School.
