Lady Bulldogs basketball beats Waelder

MCDADE – McDade High School has successfully made the transition from fall to winter sports after the Lady Bulldogs varsity basketball team opened the 2023-24 regular season Nov. 10 with a 45-30 victory at home over Waelder High School.

MCDADE — McDade High School has successfully made the transition from fall to winter sports after the Lady Bulldogs varsity basketball team opened the 2023-24 regular season Nov. 10 with a 45-30 victory at home over Waelder High School.

The Lady Bulldogs got off to a fast start in the first quarter with a 13-3 advantage and kept the Lady Wildcats at bay for the rest of the game. After taking a 21-11 lead into halftime, McDade continued to inch away from Waelder and not allow the visiting Lady Wildcats to make a run down the stretch of the third and fourth quarters.

McDade was led on the night by senior Steffanie Zavala, who had a game-high 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and two steals. Also scoring in double figures against Waelder was Lady Bulldogs sophomore Summer Jacobs with 11 points, a teamhigh five steals and two rebounds. Fellow Mc-Dade sophomore Alexis Pacheco had seven points and four steals, while junior Jessica Dube had six points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Also scoring for McDade against Waelder were junior Lauren Glosson with three points, junior Kelsey Dube with two points and sophomore Ashlyn Carpenter with two points of her own.

The Lady Bulldogs (1-0) will next compete Nov. 16-18 at the McDade Invitational Tournament and be out of action until Nov. 28 when McDade hosts Manor New Tech High School.
