BASTROP — The Bastrop High School boys varsity basketball team under head coach Eric Woods began the 2023-24 regular season on a winning note as the Bears fought for a gritty 60-44 victory at home Saturday over Rockdale High School.
This was a back-andforth contest between the Bears and Lions for most of the game but a strong fourth quarter helped Bastrop pull away from Rockdale down the stretch. Bastrop played great team defense against Rockdale and did not allow the Tigers to get into much of an offensive rhythm throughout the game.
The Bears were led by a strong first varsity game from freshman Preston Alexander, who had a team-high 19 points with three shots made from behind the arc, three steals, two assists and two rebounds in the win over the visiting Tigers. Bastrop also got a solid game from senior Gregory Wilson with nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and one blocked shot.
After Bastrop travels Tuesday night for its first road game of the year at Lake Belton High School, the Bears (1-0) will have another non-district road game Nov. 18 at Lockhart High School, return home Nov. 20 for a game against New Braunfels High School and travel Nov. 21 to take on Smithville High School.
