The application deadline fast approaches for City of Elgin 101, the town’s citizen academy in place to educate residents about local government operations, cultivate future leaders and showcase the talents of city staff members.

This is the second year that City Secretary Jennifer Stubbs will be running the group of interested locals through eight rounds of informative sessions.

“We do a whole lot of good, we’re building roads, a new police station, a wastewater treatment plant, there’s so much that I don’t think people know municipalities do,” said Stubbs in a recent interview.

lasses will be held at the council chamber and take participants through the city’s various organizations, instructed at and by leaders of the Parks and Recreation Department, the Elgin Police Department, Public Works Administration and more.

The economic development session will take attendees off site, as well.

Last year’s program was a resounding success, according to Stubbs, with a full classroom that responded positively and enjoyed it enough to even organize a graduation party for themselves.

One of the former students also went on to become a member of Elgin’s City Council, Councilmember YaLecia Love.

While a great opportunity to start a path towards a position on the council, City 101 is for anyone who lives in Elgin and simply wants to learn more about how their hometown operates, according to Stubbs.

“You don’t have to want to run for board, we just want to educate the public. But if it leads to future leaders, that’s great too,” she added.

Classes begin Jan. 22, with meetings every Monday from 6 to 8 p.m., and last through March 25.

Applications are due Nov. 29, with about a dozen openings still available, and can be found at https://www.elgintexas.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=1258.

If all continues to go well, Stubbs hopes to bring City of Elgin 101 back again next year.
