Elgin Independent School District students continue to step up and help the city fill the volunteer positions needed for local events.
Community Development Director Amy Miller took to the podium during this month’s School Board meeting to commend the young workers for all that they have done.
“If it were not for the Elgin Independent School District and these amazing student volunteers, the Hogeye Festival truly would not happen,” said Miller.
Hogeye brought in about 20,000 visitors, and over 100 dedicated individuals came through to make sure the celebration ran smoothly.
The kids helped set up the fairgrounds and manned the inflatable games and booths used by the waves of visitors all day long. Volunteer roles were filled from 5 a.m. through 7 p.m.
“They were absolutely timely, they were dependable, they were respectful, also really creative and resourceful,” added Miller, noting how the city’s help was quick to resolve any issues that came their way.
The majority of volunteer workers for the event were National Honor Society and JROTC students, admirably finding a way to balance this service alongside their usual studies, college preparation and extracurricular activities, according to the board.
Additionally, students showed up for the city’s “workday,” trimming trees, cleaning graffiti and clearing handicap ramps of dirt.
The youth volunteers then went on to help with the Nov. 1 Dia de Los Muertos celebration and are set to come out Dec. 2 to lend helping hands for Holiday by the Tracks.
“I think it’s important that [Elgin ISD] knows what a testament they are to our district and our community and what t remendous, fantastic help they have been and are being for us at the city,” closed Miller.
Elgin’s pupils continue to be an example of what the city strives to be, according to School Board leaders.
