Elgin hoops gets clutch win over Waco

The Elgin High School boys varsity basketball team picked up a huge victory Friday. Nov. 17 in its home opener as the Wildcats came from behind to defeat Waco High School 57-48. Despite racing a first-half deficit, the Wildcats came to life in the third quarter and took care of business down the stretch of the fourth quarter against the visiting Lions.

The Elgin High School boys varsity basketball team picked up a huge victory Friday. Nov. 17 in its home opener as the Wildcats came from behind to defeat Waco High School 57-48. Despite racing a first-half deficit, the Wildcats came to life in the third quarter and took care of business down the stretch of the fourth quarter against the visiting Lions.

Elgin was led with a stellar effort from sophomore guard Tyson McFarlin, who exploded for the Wildcats with a game-high 26 points, three shots from behind the arc, five steals and three assists.

Wildcats junior forward Noddyn Bailey continued his strong start to the 2023-24 season with 11 points and seven rebounds, while fellow Elgin junior guard Amar Bermudez also scored in double figures with 11 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Elgin also had a game at home Nov. 20 as the Wildcats hosted the Cougars of Jarrell High School for another non-district contest. In a back-and-forth affair, the Wildcats came up just short with the Cougars pulling away late in the fourth quarter as Elgin fell 54-47.

Wildcats senior guard Nathen Lewis had a team-high 15 points from five three-pointers and five rebounds, while McFarlin also scored in double figures with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists. Bermudez had seven points and six rebounds, while junior center Jonathan Richard finished with four points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots.

Elgin opened its regular season back on Nov. 11 on the road against McCallum High School in Austin and fought hard to a gritty 52-49 victory over the Knights. Lewis had 15 points to go along with four rebounds, while junior guard Marcus Hickman added eight points, two steals and two rebounds in the win against McCallum.

The Wildcats under Head Coach David Wilson will next compete in the Lockhart Tournament with its first game Nov. 30 at 9 a.m. against Geronimo Navarro High School.
