Lady Wildcats runner-up at Crockett

AUSTIN – The Elgin High School girls varsity basketball team went 5-1 over the span of Nov. 16-18 as the Lady Wildcats were the runner-up squad at the Crockett High School Tournament held in Austin.

AUSTIN — The Elgin High School girls varsity basketball team went 5-1 over the span of Nov. 16-18 as the Lady Wildcats were the runner-up squad at the Crockett High School Tournament held in Austin.

The Lady Wildcats picked up their first five wins of the 2023-24 regular season with victories over Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders, Akins High School, Crockett High School, Pflugerville Connally High School and Valor South Austin High School.

In the 34-11 victory over Ann Richards, the Lady Wildcats were led by senior guard Jaylan Roberson in double figures with 10 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists. Sophomore guard Trinity Martinez had nine points and two steals, while fellow Elgin sophomore Sharmonique Williams did it all with eight points, eight steals, eight rebounds and two blocks.

Elgin won a thrilling 34-33 contest over the 6A Akins Lady Eagles as the Lady Wildcats got a team-high 15 points from Martinez as she made five three-pointers.

In Elgin’s dominant 44-20 victory over the Crockett Lady Cougars, the Lady Wildcats were led by Williams with 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists while Martinez also scored in double figures with 10 points on three shots made from behind the arc, four rebounds and two steals.

The Lady Wildcats had their most notable win of the early season with a 53-44 victory in overtime over the Lady Cougars of Pflugerville Connally as Elgin had to rally in the second half to pull even and then was dominant in the overtime period to secure the win.

Elgin put on another defensive clinic in its 34-16 victory over the Lady Falcons of Valor South Austin. Roberson had six points, nine steals, seven rebounds and three assists while Williams also had six points with seven rebounds, five steals, four assists and three blocked shots.

The Lady Wildcats (5-5 overall record) under Head Coach James Tibbets will be at the New Braunfels High School Tournament Nov. 30 through Dec. 1 and have their first game Nov. 30 at 12 p.m. against Leander Rouse High School.
