Wildcats hoops continues to impress

LOCKHART — The Elgin High School boys varsity basketball team is clicking early in the 2023-24 regular season under Head Coach David Wilson as the Wildcats are currently on a fourgame winning streak following success at the Lockhart Tournament that concluded on Saturday evening.

The Wildcats had their way with a 72-45 victory over Geronimo Navarro High School, took care of business 60-42 over host Lockhart High School, handled Austin Crockett Early College High School in a 50-41 win and routed Gonzales High School 75-47 to conclude the tourney.

Against Navarro Panthers, the Wildcats got a balanced scoring attack from junior Amar Bermudez with 14 points, junior Noddyn Bailey with eight points, junior Tyson McFarlin with eight points and senior Bralon Rodriguez with seven points of his own.

The Wildcats used strong team defense to get a victory over the Lockhart Lions with help from senior Nathen Lewis, who finished in double figures with 11 points and five steals.

Elgin really had to scratch and claw to get the win against the Crockett Cougars but handled business down the stretch with 15 points from McFarlin and double- figure scoring from Bermudez with 10 points, five steals, five rebounds and two assists.

Against the Gonzales Apaches, the Wildcats were firing on all cylinders in the lopsided victory. McFarlin was Elgin’s leading scorer with a team-high 18 points, five made three-pointers, four steals and four assists. Bailey also scored in double figures with 13 points and six rebounds, while fellow junior Jonathan Richard had eight points and seven rebounds in the win.

Elgin (6-1 overall record) will next compete Dec. 7-9 at the nearby Taylor Tournament and the Wildcats will have their first game Thursday at 1:30 p.m. against Austin Royals HomeSchool.
