The Elgin High School boys varsity basketball team was able to continue its strong start to the 2023-24 regular season, as the Wildcats picked up a 54-49 victory at home Dec. 4 over Cedar Park Vista Ridge High School. The Wildcats also got victories Dec. 7 over Manor New Tech High School and Austin Royals HomeSchool at the Taylor Tournament.
In the home win against the Vista Ridge Rangers, the Wildcats were led by sophomore Tyson McFarlin with a game-high 20 points on five three-pointers made, six steals, four rebounds and two assists. Elgin senior Nathen Lewis had nine points on two three-pointers made, three rebounds two assists and one steal.
Wildcats junior Marcus Hickman had eight points with two steals and two assists, while fellow junior Amar Bermudez had seven points, three steals, three rebounds, two assists and one block against Vista Ridge.
At the Taylor Tournament, the Wildcats continued to play hard with a 56-48 victory against the Titans of Manor New Tech and then cruised to a dominant 49-26 win against Austin Royals HomeSchool for Elgin’s ninth win of the season.
The Wildcats had their seven-game win streak snapped Friday with a hard-fought 53-47 loss to Georgetown Gateway College Preparatory School on the second day of the tournament.
After Elgin (9-3 overall record) plays host Dec. 12 to Smithville High School, the Wildcats, under Head Coach David Wilson, will have a rematch on the road Dec. 15 at Manor New Tech. The Wildcats will start 5A-District 23 play Dec. 21 as Elgin hits the road to take on Georgetown East View High School.
