Bears rout Austin Royals at Taylor Tourney

TAYLOR – The Bastrop High School boys varsity basketball team under Head Coach Eric Woods competed last week at the Taylor Tournament and won in its opening game 60-32 in dominant fashion over Austin Royals Homeschool.

Following a close 63-51 loss at home Dec. 5 to Kyle Lehman High School, the Bears got back in the win column last Thursday over the Austin Royals. Bastrop senior Nathaniel Mosley led the way for his squad with 14 points on two three-pointers, five assists, two rebounds and one steal. Also scoring in double figures for the Bears was freshman Preston Alexander with 12 points (two three-pointers made) and three assists as well as junior Jaelyn Gratten with 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and one blocked shot.

Following a tough 63-33 loss to Austin Travis Early College High School, Bastrop fought very hard Friday in a 75-70 loss to the Ducks of Taylor High School.

Against Taylor, Mosley again scored a teamhigh 23 points with three shots made from behind the arc, five rebounds and four assists. Gratten went off for 20 points, seven rebounds and two assists in a game that Bastrop almost came back from multiple double-digit deficits. Bears freshman Diego Rangel also scored in double figures with 12 points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists in the loss to the Ducks.

Bastrop also played on Saturday and came up short against Georgetown Gateway College Preparatory School as the Bears fell 57-45 to the Gators.

After the Bears travel Dec. 12 to take on Wimberley High School, Bastrop will return home on Friday night for another non-district game against Canyon Lake High School. Bastrop will have its first 5A-District 23 game on the road Dec. 21 at Pflugerville High School.
