FLATONIA — The Smithville High School girls varsity basketball team picked up two victories over the past weekend with the Lady Tigers at the Flatonia Tournament.

Smithville had its opening game of the tourney against Stockdale High School and was able to dominate from start to finish in a lopsided 58-31 win over the Lady Brahmas.

The Lady Tigers got off to a big lead against Stockdale early in the game, were ahead comfortably at halftime and were then able to coast to a 27-point triumph.

Smithville junior Arabella Gutierrez led the way with 12 points on two made three-pointers, four rebounds and one assist. Lady Tigers sophomore Sydnie Brenner also scored in double figures with 11 points on two shots made from behind the arc, five steals and four assists.

In a productive game, Smithville senior Monica Lewis added eight points with two three-pointers of her own, five rebounds and one steal in the win over Stockdale. Following Smithville’s close 54-46 loss Friday to tournament host Flatonia High School, the Lady Tigers bounced back Saturday with a dominant 61-34 victory against the Lady Lions of Fayetteville High School.

Smithville got out to a 16-8 lead over Fayetteville in the first quarter and maintained a 30-17 lead by halftime. Although the Lady Lions got to within a 41-30 deficit by the end of the third quarter, the Lady Tigers exploded offensively with a 20-4 run in the fourth quarter to put the game completely out of reach. Brenner went off for a game-high 26 points in the win, while Gutierrez and senior Zanylah Hall each scored in double figures with 13 points and 11 points, respectively.

The Lady Tigers under Head Coach Rachel Altman were scheduled to begin 4A-District 22 play Dec. 12 at Caldwell High School and then will also travel Friday night to take on rival La Grange High School.
