The Elgin High School girls varsity basketball team, under Head Coach Chris Tibbets, fought hard this past week but fell short with a 54-32 loss at home to Pflugerville High School and a 37-26 defeat on the road at Leander High School.

In the 5A-District 23 opener Dec. 5 at home, the Lady Wildcats held their own throughout the first half, as they trailed the Lady Panthers 12-11 after the first quarter and were within striking distance down 25-18 at halftime.

However, Pflugerville got going on offense with a 19-6 run in the third quarter to take a 44-26 lead and Elgin could not close the gap the rest of the way.

In the loss, Lady Wildcats sophomore Trinity Martinez had nine points on three made three-pointers and one assist. Elgin junior Brianna Penson also added six points of her own on two made three-pointers and one rebound.

Friday night the Lady Wildcats made the trip to Leander for a non-district game against the Lady Lions and played excellent defense for a majority of the game. It was a defensive battle throughout the first half and although Elgin got to within just a 15-14 deficit early in the third quarter, Leander’s offense finally got going to take a sizable lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Martinez led the way for the Lady Wildcats with 12 points on four three-pointers, six rebounds and three steals. Elgin senior Jaylan Roberson also had five points with one three-pointer, four rebounds, three assists and one steal in the loss to the Lady Lions.

Following the Lady Wildcats’ scheduled district game Dec. 12 at Pflugerville Hendrickson High School, Elgin will remain on the road Friday night at Pflugerville Connally High School. Elgin previously played the Connally Lady Cougars and won a 53-44 overtime thriller Nov. 18 at the Austin Crockett Tournament.
