— City Manager Thomas Mattis

Elgin’s City Council finalized the list of nonprofits set to receive bonus funding through the $50,000 already set aside within the budget.

City Manager Thomas Mattis believes this may be the largest number of nonprofit groups included in the annual community distribution.

“For the most part, I think we were able to make reasonable donations to a number of groups in town. The city has a really good history of supporting nonprofit groups in the community, and obviously as we’ve grown and the city has grown, our ability to contribute more each year has increased,” said Mattis.

Since 2016, $323,000 has been distributed on behalf of taxpayers, with a focus put on local groups that serve Elgin citizens and residents, according to the council.

“We always wish we could do more, but I think this record speaks for itself,” added Mattis.

Through applications, this year’s requests called for almost $375,000, $260,000 of which coming from two groups, Allure and Black Men’s Health Clinic, both of which did not receive funding.

Nonprofits receiving contributions are: Drive a Senior – $3,750, Advocacy Outreach – $4,500, Bastrop County Women’s Shelter – $1,875, CASA – $1,750, Elgin Juneteenth Organization – $2,500, Children’s Advocacy Center – $3,250, Elgin Alley Cats – $3,000, Elgin Cares – $9,400, Elgin Community Cupboard – $11,100, Elgin Arts Association – $3,125, Mary Christian Burleson Foundation – $4,125, Relay for Life – $750 and VFW Post No. 6115 – $1,000. None of the organizations received the exact amount requested.
