MANOR — The Elgin High School boys varsity basketball team returned to action Friday, Dec. 15 for a non-district road game and were able to pull off a 50-44 victory over Manor New Tech High School.
In a very tight defensive battle throughout the night between the Wildcats and Titans, it was Elgin who came out on top in the back-and-forth affair to pick up a key road victory.
Elgin held a 10-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, increased its lead to 24-19 at halftime, New Tech rallied to tie it at 39-39 by the end of the third quarter before Elgin held on for a six-point victory at the end of regulation.
Down the stretch of the contest, the Wildcats got some clutch three-point baskets from senior Nathen Lewis to put this game out of reach. Elgin also got a great collective defensive effort down the stretch from Lewis, junior Marcus Hickman, junior Amar Bermudez and junior Zaire Nuells as they helped shut down the Titan offense in the fourth quarter.
After the Wildcats (10-2 overall record) under Head Coach David Wilson travel this Thursday for their 5A-District 23 opener at Georgetown East View High School, Elgin will next be in action Dec. 28 at home versus Austin Hyde Park High School and return to district play Jan. 3 at home against Pflugerville Connally High School.
