SMITHVILLE — The Smithville High School girls varsity basketball team under Head Coach Rachel Altman began 4A-District 22 play this past week and split its two games. The Lady Tigers won convincingly 49-30 on the road Dec. 12 at Caldwell High School and were defeated Friday night 53-38 at rival La Grange High School.
Smithville handled business last Tuesday in the district opener in Caldwell as the Lady Tigers played tight team defense on the Lady Hornets all night. This was a solid team effort by a Smithville team that should be in prime position for a playoff spot.
The Lady Tigers were led on the night with a productive output from sophomore LaDonije Lewis, who finished with a game-high 19 points, four rebounds and four steals. Fellow Smithville sophomore Sydnie Brenner also scored in double figures for the Lady Tigers as she had 14 points, four steals and three assists in the 19-point triumph over Caldwell.
However, although the Lady Tigers played back-and-forth basketball Friday with the Lady Leopards for the first three quarters, a fourth-quarter run by La Grange put this game out of reach. Smithville senior Monica Lewis had 13 points on three shots made from three-point range to lead the Lady Tigers, while LaDonije Lewis had a double-double effort with 10 points, a team-high 15 rebounds, three steals, one assist and one blocked shot.
After the Lady Tigers hit the road Dec. 19 to take on Manor New Tech High School, the girls varsity squad is scheduled to host the Smithville Holiday Tournament beginning Dec. 27. Smithville will return to district action Tuesday, Jan. 2 as the Lady Tigers will play host to the Lady Buffaloes of Giddings High School.
