The Elgin High School boys varsity basketball team played against very tough 5A-District 23 opponents this past week as the Wildcats were edged at home Jan. 3 by Pflugerville Connally High School and went on the road Jan. 5 and fell to Georgetown High School.
CONNALLY COUGARS 54, ELGIN WILDCATS 50
In a back-and-forth contest from start to finish, the Wildcats fought hard but came up just short in their comeback attempt as Elgin dropped a 54-50 contest to the Connally Cougars.
Elgin was locked in defensively all night but Connally was able to make shots from the field down the stretch and at the free-throw line to hold on. Wildcats senior Nathen Lewis led Elgin in scoring with 13 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals, while sophomore Tyson McFarlin had 12 points on a trio of three-pointers. Elgin junior Amar Bermudez also scored in double figures with 11 points on two three-pointers made with three steals, while junior Noddyn Bailey also had a solid game on both ends of the floor with eight points, three rebounds and two steals.
GEORGETOWN EAGLES 70, ELGIN WILDCATS 57
Against a Georgetown team that is currently tied for first at 3-0 in the district standings, the Wildcats could not get over the hump on the road as they were defeated 70-57 by the Eagles.
McFarlin went off in the loss for a team-high 28 points on five three-pointers made to go along with five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Bermudez also scored in double figures with 14 points as well as five steals, while junior Jonathan Richard added six points, nine rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot.
The Wildcats (13-4 overall, 1-2 district record) under Head Coach David Wilson are scheduled to hit the road Tuesday for a district contest at Cedar Creek High School and will return home Friday at 7 p.m. to host Bastrop High School.
