SMITHVILLE — The Smithville High School girls varsity basketball team stayed in the thick of the current playoff race Tuesday, Jan. 2 when the Lady Tigers picked up a pivotal 56-53 victory over the Lady Buffaloes of Giddings High School.
Down by 10 points at two separate points in the third quarter, the Lady Tigers locked in against the Lady Buffaloes at home and rallied for a much-needed win to put them in a tie for second place with rival La Grange High School in the 4A-District 22 standings.
Smithville senior Monica Lewis did it all as she finished with 13 points, a game-high seven steals on defense, five rebounds and two assists. Lady Tigers sophomore Sydnie Brenner also scored in double figures against Giddings as had 11 points on two three-pointers made, a team-high seven assists and two rebounds.
The Lady Tigers have now won two games in a row under Head Coach Rachel Altman after a 37-35 victory Dec. 30 over Sealy High School at the Smithville Holiday Tournament.
Following last week’s victory, the Lady Tigers (11-8 overall and 3-1 in district play) are scheduled to resume district games Jan. 9 at Austin Achieve High School. They will have a huge road contest Friday, Jan. 12 at 6:15 p.m. against 4A-District 22 frontrunner Taylor High School.
