SMITHVILLE — The annual Bastrop County Martin Luther King Jr. Walk celebrates and remembers the life and impact of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which protested racial discrimination in federal and state law.
On Monday, Jan. 15, the walk will begin at 10 a.m. at MLK Park, 1101 MLK Dr. in Smithville. The Hon. Sharon Foerster, mayor of Smithville, will provide the welcome prior to the walk, which will then proceed to Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church and Mary A. Brown Primary School.
The inspirational and celebratory program will begin at 11 a.m. at the Smithville Recreation Center, 106 Royston St., and will include speakers, dancers, talks and more.
This is the 35th walk organized by the Bastrop County Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission, established in 1988. The walk rotates annually between the three cities in the county.
