BASTROP — The Bastrop Museum & Visitor Center has been named “nonprofit of the year,” while continuing their devotion to preservation and education with a new special exhibition.

The recognition comes from the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce, recently accredited by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce with a four-star distinction, selected for the institution’s exceptional contributions to the community.

“This is a testament to the dedication and passion of our staff, volunteers and board members. We are humbled to be chosen among so many outstanding nonprofits in our community. This award motivates us to continue serving Bastrop County with even greater enthusiasm and creativity,” said Nicole DeGuzman, executive director of the museum.

Alongside the honors comes a new exhibit to kick off the year. The center unveiled “Behind the Scenes at the Museum” this past week, a fascinating journey that takes visitors through the hidden world of museum work, according to representatives.

“While exhibits may not come alive at night like in the movies, the magic of a museum lies in the education and inspiration achieved through storytelling and the collection of artifacts,” said Manager of Museum Collections Heather Bloom.

“Behind the Scenes at the Museum” sheds light on the fascinating history and inner workings of museums, from their origins in mid-16th century art collections to the crucial roles of storage, ownership records and the dedicated staff and volunteers who keep everything running smoothly.

Through a collection of artifacts that date as far back as the 18th century, visitors can learn about the evolution of collecting. The history of museums is traced from their early days as private curiosity cabinets to the public institutions known today.

Unseen work is on display, the meticulous processes of artifact care, conservation and documentation that ensure these precious pieces are preserved for future generations.

Panels also explore contemporary museum careers and the different ways that galleries are adapting to engage new audiences in the digital age.

“Come experience the magic of museums like never before,” added Bloom.

The display will be in the Special Exhibition room at 904 Main St. through March 30, free to the public. Call 512-303-0904 for more information.
