Bring out the waste

SMITHVILLE — Bastrop and Lee County will host their annual Hazardous Household Waste Clean Up event, Jan. 20, in Smithville.

Mixing chemicals and flammable materials in standard waste receptacles can release toxic fumes or lead to fires, and improper disposal of solvents may enable ground or water contamination.

Acceptable household hazardous waste items include tires, cleaning supplies, electronics, batteries, degreasers, polishers, pool chemicals, latex or oil paints, aerosol paint cans, stains, thinners, herbicides and pesticides.

There is a limit of 10 tires per vehicle.

Vouchers are required for collection, and addresses must be verified with utility bills or a driver’s license. They can be found in the Bastrop County Development Services office, at 211 Jackson Street, Smithville City Hall, 317 Main St., or the Lee County Annex, 898 E. Richmond St. in Giddings.

Online vouchers are available from www.co.bastrop.tx.us/page/ds.household_waste.

The dumping facility is located at 109 Taylor St., Smithville, and will be open from 9 a.m. to noon. Contact the Bastrop County Development Services at 512-581-7176 for more information.
