The Elgin High School girls varsity basketball team won its third 5A-District 23 game of the season Friday, Jan. 26 as the Lady Wildcats cruised to a 48-36 victory at home over Pflugerville Connally High School.
Following a slow offensive start in the first quarter, the Lady Wildcat offense came to life in the second and third quarters against the Lady Cougars as Elgin kept Connally at bay during the second half.
Elgin was led by sophomore Trinity Martinez with a game-high 17 points on four three-pointers, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Lady Wildcats junior Makayla Thompson had a double-double effort with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Jaylan Roberson had a solid all-around game with nine points, five rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Elgin sophomore Sharmonique Williams also had six points to go along with five assists and four rebounds, while junior Sabra Baker was dominant on defense with a game-high 18 rebounds against Connally.
The Lady Wildcats also traveled Jan. 23 to take on Georgetown East View High School and were defeated 40-25 by the Lady Patriots. Martinez had eight points and three rebounds, while Williams also scored eight points and dished out three assists.
Elgin (10-20 overall, 3-8 district record) under Head Coach Chris Tibbets is scheduled Jan. 30 for a district road game at Georgetown High School and will then travel Friday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. to take on Cedar Creek High School.
