The Elgin High School girls varsity soccer team began 5A-District 23 play this past week with matches at Georgetown East View High School and at home versus Pflugerville Connally High School.

Following a close 1-0 loss to East View on the road Jan. 23 in the district opener, the Elgin returned girls home last Friday evening and won 3-2 over Connally on Teacher Appreciation Night.
The Lady Wildcats got out to a 2-1 lead at halftime and were able to hold on down the stretch as Elgin picked up its first district victory of the season. Elgin had goals scored by junior Dory Estrada, junior Sheyla Aguirre and junior Kailyn Cook.

“Sheyla Aguirre is in her second year as a varsity player. She has gone from playing five-to-10 minutes as a sophomore last year to playing the entire 90 minutes in these last two games vs East View and Connally,” Elgin Head Coach Gabriela Perez said. “She had a great game versus East View, even though we fell short 1-0, but an even better game versus Connally when she made a goal as a right back from the 10-yard line.”

Perez also spoke highly of the junior duo of Estrada and Cook and their impact so far this 2023-24 season, while Lady Wildcats senior Juliet Almazan has been strong as the goalkeeper.

“The front-line duo of Dory and Kailyn have returned and are hard at work,” Perez said. Their chemistry is unmatched. Our keeper, Juliet Almazan, has made numerous strong saves.”

Elgin (3-4-1 overall, 1-1 in district play) is scheduled Jan. 30 to travel for a district match at Georgetown High School and will remain on the road Friday, Feb. 2 at Cedar Creek High School.
