The Elgin High School boys varsity soccer teams started 5A-District 23 play this past week as the Wildcats hosted Georgetown East View High School and traveled to Pflugerville Connally High School.
After falling 2-0 at home Jan. 23 to East View in the district opener, the Elgin boys hit the road last Friday and came up short of pulling off a comeback with a 2-1 loss at Connally. The host Cougars held off an inspired rally by the Wildcats as Connally remains undefeated this season with a 9-0-1 record.
“We learned that we can compete with the very best, we just have to believe,” Elgin Head Coach Eduardo Lerma said. “We had several chances to change the outcome but came up short.”
Jose Raul Ramirez scored the lone goal for the Wildcats and was assisted by Memo Hernandez. Elgin goalkeeper Michael Castillo kept his team in the match and had five saves against Connally.
Elgin (1-7-2 overall, 0-2 in district play) is scheduled Jan. 30 to host Georgetown and will remain on its home turf Friday, Feb. 2 as the Wildcats take on Cedar Creek.
“This week will be great for us. We get to play in front of fans and family as we try to get up in the standings,” Lerma said. “We have played Georgetown very tough the last two times we’ve played and I hope my team is ready to continue that.”
