Three of Elgin’s young Future Farmers of America members are headed to Houston to compete at the state level during the Livestock Show and Rodeo, March 3-4.
Paden Maass, Noah Cooper and Jonah Crowell have been honing their mechanical skillset and took their talents to the Area 12 Tractor Technician Contest this past week, competing at Sam Houston State University against other student engineers.
Mass claimed fourth place and Crowell took home 10th in the division.
The compet it ion was composed of a 100-question exam, covering mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems, in addition to an identification and appraisal component. The young mechanics recommended service for 20 different components of tractors and various farming machinery.
As a team of three, Elgin’s representatives also located and corrected malfunctions in an agricultural tractor, based on a customer’s comments from a service work order. They performed a pre-delivery inspection, including an engine oil, transmission, hydraulic fluid, coolant level and battery voltage check.
This is the second year that Elgin has competed in the local competition.
