Wildcat to Lobo: Maass commits to Sul Ross

Elgin High School varsity football senior kicker Paden Maass announced his commitment Friday, Feb. 2 to continue his career as a student-athlete at Sul Ross State University for the Lobos football program in Alpine.

Elgin High School varsity football senior kicker Paden Maass announced his commitment Friday, Feb. 2 to continue his career as a student-athlete at Sul Ross State University for the Lobos football program in Alpine.

“Firstly, thank you to God for the position I’m in and all the opportunities he’s blessed me with,” Maass said on X. “These last four years have been amazing and a journey I’ll never forget. I’d like to thank my parents and coaches for always supporting me and helping me strive for excellence. Thank you to my teammates for the early mornings and always being alongside me. Wildcat football and Coach (Heath) Clawson have taught me life lessons that will stick with me forever. Alpine felt like home and I can’t wait to compete in the Lone Star Conference.”

Maass was a standout kicker for the Wildcats during the 2023 season and made 32-of-33 extra point attempts, kicked 5-of-6 field goals with a long of 39 yards and was known for his strong leg with 41-of-49 kickoffs into the endzone for a touchback.

Over his Elgin career, Maass was successful on 80-of-82 extra point attempts and made 16-of-18 field-goal attempts for 131 points at the varsity level. In 2023, Maass was honored as second-team Academic All-State, an All-CenTex East selection at kicker and was also selected as second- team 5A-2 District 11.

Maass will join a SRSU Lobos football program in West Texas that is set to make the transition this upcoming 2024 season to Division 2 in the Lone Star Conference.
