Lady Tigers victorious on senior night 63-20

SMITHVILLE – The Smithville High School girls varsity basketball team celebrated senior night Friday, Feb. 2 with a dominant 63-20 district win at home over Austin Achieve High School.

SMITHVILLE — The Smithville High School girls varsity basketball team celebrated senior night Friday, Feb. 2 with a dominant 63-20 district win at home over Austin Achieve High School.

Prior to the game, the Lady Tigers’ senior quartet of Monica Lewis, Avery Bezner, Brianna Trahan and LaDaysha Lewis was honored.

Smithville made easy work of the visiting Lady Polar Bears as sophomore Sydnie Brenner led the way with 15 points, five steals and two rebounds.

The previous week, Brenner could not be stopped in a 91-17 victory against Manor New Tech High School as she went off for a game-high 34 points, six steals, three rebounds and two assists.

Versus Achieve, the Lady Tigers also got double- digit scoring from junior Arabella Gutierrez as she had 12 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists. Bezner had eight points to go along with four rebounds and three steals, while Monica Lewis had a solid all-around game with seven points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Smithville (14-12 overall, 6-5 district record) is currently tied for the No. 3 seed with Giddings High School in the 4A-District 22 playoff standings. The Lady Tigers are scheduled Feb. 6 to host Taylor High School, who is the frontrunner with an 11-0 mark in the district, to conclude the regular season.
