Holiday breaks, early release dates and graduation plans were recently solidified at Elgin Independent School District’s Jan. 23 board meeting.
The Elgin ISD Board of Trustees approved the instructional year calendar for 2023-24, and the changes will be in effect starting in July.
"We're happy to get our instructional calendar to parents and staff,” said district spokesperson Marcial Guajardo, “so they may begin planning their year ahead around it.”
Next school year, students and staff will be off Nov. 20-24 for Thanksgiving break, Dec. 18-Jan. 2 for winter break and March 11-15 for spring break. Students will have an early release on Dec. 15 and March 8, and there will be staff development trainings on Jan. 3 and March 18.
In addition, trustees announced there will be at least one holiday date each month from September to May. The class of 2024’s graduation ceremony will take place at Shoreline Church in Austin on May 24. Staff members will also receive professional learning and planning days throughout the year.
“Elgin ISD administrators put the calendar together after careful consideration of previous calendars, input from stakeholders and consideration of how the calendar year falls this time around,” said Guajardo. “For example, Christmas is on a Monday, and while parents expressed an interest in launching Winter Break around a full week, the district eventually opted against officially starting the break on Christmas day so they may have more time to prepare for the holidays.”
A survey consisting of 414 responses aided with the decisions that went into the calendar. Factors such as ending the school year before Memorial Day, having a short first week of school and a full week off for Thanksgiving all played a role.
The board of trustees were unanimous in their approval of the instructional year calendar.
