Cedar Creek knocks off Elgin

The Cedar Creek High School boys varsity basketball team split its 5A-District 23 games this past week with a loss at home to Pflugerville Connally High School and a road victory against Elgin High School.

CONNALLY COUGARS 48, CEDAR CREEK EAGLES 42

The Eagles came up short Jan. 30 as Cedar Creek was defeated 48-42 in a hard-fought loss to the Connally Cougars. Cedar Creek could not get much going offensively early down 7-3 after the first quarter but was able to get within a 21-18 deficit by halftime.

Although the Eagles put together a rally in the third quarter to go up 32-29, it was the Cougars who came up big down the stretch of regulation with a 19-10 run of their own as Connally picked up a big district win on the road.

Cedar Creek junior Kenji Franklin led the way in a double-double effort with 14 points and 13 rebounds, senior Robert Conrad also scored in double figures with 13 points to go along with seven rebounds and senior Leland Washington added seven points and 10 rebounds.

CEDAR CREEK EAGLES 68, ELGIN WILDCATS 50

The Eagles got a district road win Feb. 2 on the road against the Wildcats as Cedar Creek cruised to a 68-50 victory in Elgin.

Conrad went off for a game-high 31 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field, four assists and two steals. Franklin had another double-double with 16 points on 8-of-9 shots from the floor with 12 rebounds, while senior Micah McDonald also scored in double figures with 13 points and five rebounds in the win.

Cedar Creek (22-9 overall, 7-4 district record) under Head Coach Valentino Maxwell is currently the No. 4 seed in the district playoff standings. The Eagles are scheduled Feb. 6 to host Georgetown High School and will travel Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. for a district rivalry game at Bastrop High School.
