AUSTIN — For the first time in program history, the Bastrop Lady Bears varsity softball team are co-district champions in District 24-5A after a 5-0 shutout win over McCallum Tuesday, April 15.
The game was a pitcher’s duel early, with both teams scoreless through the first four innings.
Bastrop managed just one hit during that stretch — a single from senior Jada Canada — while McCallum threatened in the third after a two-out double, but a popup ended the inning.
The Lady Bears broke the game open in the top of the fifth, capitalizing on a defensive error and a single from Laicey Sullivent to put a runner in scoring position. An error drove in the first run and a single by sophomore Jessa Clay made it 2-0.
Sophomore Ella Griesenbeck followed with a two-run single, then later stole home to give Bastrop a commanding 5-0 lead.
Griesenbeck also got the start in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout with four strikeouts across seven scoreless innings. She ended the game — and sealed the district title — with a strikeout in the bottom of the seventh.
Bastrop closed the regular season with a 17-6-1 overall record and a 13-1 mark in district play.
The Lady Bears now turn their focus to the postseason, where they will compete in the Class 5A Division I bracket. They will face Pflugerville Hendrickson in a best-of-three series.
Bastrop will host the series opener at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 24, then travel to Hendrickson for the second game at 6 p.m. Friday.
If necessary, a third game will settle the score Saturday morning at Bastrop High School.
