Attendees at this week’s farmers market had a new place to rest after grabbing a few locally sourced goods.
The massive chair at Veterans Memorial Park comes courtesy of the city of Elgin Public Works crew and fills in the space left behind after the ground’s WWI cannon was relocated to the Depot Museum.
“It’s so big, it’s crazy,” said Autumn Wilson, climbing atop the seat’s arms and backrest.
This is the team’s second rendition for some new, big seating, after the first installment weakened from all the attention it brought and began to break in some places.
The substantial chair dwarfs surrounding benches and is much sturdier with an added step stool, positioned to watch the sun set behind the park’s upcoming expansion.
Visitors can climb atop the giant furniture, read, take a few pictures and witness all the progress being made on the 200 block of Depot Street.
The addition’s Kompan train play sculpture and surrounding playground equipment have already been installed at the construction site, with new sidewalks stretching across the 300 block.
The next several weeks will see more sidewalk work and the installation of surfacing in the playground area, according to city representatives.
The park expansion is funded through city of Elgin Certificates of Obligation 2021a, American Rescue Plan Act Funds, St. David’s Foundation, Jimmy and Cindy Ferguson, T-Mobile and local donors.
Wood for the giant chair’s construction was generously donated by Parker Lumber Supply.
