The Elgin High School varsity basketball team continued 5A-District 23 play this past week as the Wildcats had road games at Bastrop High School and Pflugerville High School.
ELGIN WILDCATS 56, BASTROP BEARS 51
The Wildcats were able to grind out a 56-51 win Feb. 6 against the Bastrop Bears as Elgin put an end to a five-game losing streak in district play.
Notable performers for Elgin were junior Amar Bermudez with 12 points to go along with four rebounds and three steals, while fellow Wildcats junior Zaire Nuells scored in double figures with 10 points on two three-pointers made, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Bastrop junior Jaelyn Gratten scored in double figures with 12 points to go along with nine rebounds and three steals, while Bears senior Gregory Wilson had eight points and a team-high 14 rebounds in the close loss.
PFLUGERVILLE PANTHERS 58, ELGIN WILDCATS 55
Despite a valiant comeback attempt, the Wildcats fell just short Feb. 9 as Elgin was edged 58-55 on the road at Pflugerville.
Wildcats senior Nathen Lewis led the way with a team-high 21 points on five three-pointers made, eight rebounds and three steals. Bermudez also scored in double figures with 14 points, four steals and two assists in the three-point loss to the Panthers.
Elgin (16-11 overall, 4-9 district record) under Head Coach David Wilson wrapped up the season Tuesday at home versus Pflugerville Hendrickson High School.
