GEORGETOWN — The Elgin High School boys varsity soccer team picked up its most pivotal victory of the season Friday, Feb. 16 as the Wildcats went on the road and stunned 5A-District 23 foe Georgetown East View High School 2-1.
In a roller coaster of a match, the Wildcats got on the board first when sophomore Miguel Aguilar notched a goal on a corner kick tap-in to give Elgin a 1-0 lead over East View.
After the host Patriots scored the equalizer a few minutes later, the Wildcats would get some heroics late in the match. With eight minutes remaining in very windy conditions, junior Luis Cruz-Rodriguez scored on a free kick from 30 yards out in what ended up being the match-winning goal for Elgin.
“Wind was the 12th man for sure,” said Elgin Head Coach Eduardo Lerma after the match.
Elgin (3-10-1 overall, 2-5-1 district record) is scheduled Feb. 20 to host undefeated Pflugerville Connally High School and will travel Friday, Feb. 23 at 7:15 p.m. for a district road match at Georgetown High School. The Wildcats played the Connally Cougars very tough in the first match Jan. 26 with a 2-1 loss, while Elgin was also edged Jan. 30 by the Georgetown Eagles in a 1-0 defeat.
