DEL VALLE — The Elgin High School girls varsity powerlifting team had its final meet before regionals Saturday, Feb. 17, as the Lady Wildcats lifted at the Lady Cardinal Invitational hosted by Del Valle High School.
The Lady Wildcats competed in the bench press, squat and deadlift, placing first as a team with 56 points. Elgin had five individual lifters win gold medals and three more take home silver medals in their respective weight classes.
First-place finishers for the Lady Wildcats were Nya Kirk Jones in the 242-and-over class with 1,330 total pounds lifted, Jordin Seeger in the 148-pound class with 950, Maria Yanez in the 123-pound class with 925, JaLiyah Price in the 220-pound class with 905 and Elizabeth Nunez in the 114-pound class with 840 total pounds lifted.
Runner-up placers for Elgin were Grace Hagen in the 181-pound class with 810 total pounds lifted, Jessica Dominguez Lackey in the 132-pound class with 685 and Zoey Smith was also a second-place finisher in the 105-pound class with 590.
The Elgin boys varsity powerlifting squad will also compete Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Del Valle meet and the Lady Wildcats are now set for March 1-2 with the upcoming regional meet hosted at the Elgin High School gymnasium.
