Playoff-bound Lady Tigers fall to Yates

ALTAIR – The Smithville High School girls varsity basketball team had its 2023-24 season come to an end Monday, Feb. 12, as the Lady Tigers were defeated 56-37 by Houston Yates High School in the 4A bi-district round of the playoffs held at neutral site Rice Consolidated High School.

ALTAIR — The Smithville High School girls varsity basketball team had its 2023-24 season come to an end Monday, Feb. 12, as the Lady Tigers were defeated 56-37 by Houston Yates High School in the 4A bi-district round of the playoffs held at neutral site Rice Consolidated High School.

Smithville trailed 14-7 after the first quarter, closed the deficit to just 20-15 at halftime and the Yates Lady Lions used a 22-12 run in the third quarter to help them pull away from the Lady Tigers down the stretch of the game.

The Lady Tigers were led on the night by sophomore Sydnie Brenner, as she had a team-high 12 points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal. Fellow sophomore LaDonije Lewis had a solid all-around game for Smithville in a double-double effort with 11 points, 11 rebounds, five steals, and one blocked shot. Lady Tigers senior Monica Lewis added four points, six rebounds, four steals and one assist in the loss to Yates.

Smithville, under Head Coach Rachel Altman, made the postseason as the No. 4 seed out of 4A-District 22 and went 14-14 overall with a 6-6 mark in district play. The Lady Tigers will look to make another run back to the playoffs next year with many of Smithville’s core players set to return to the court.
