Lady Wildcats win three in Round Rock

ROUND ROCK – The Elgin High School varsity softball team picked up its first three victories of the season Feb. 22-24 as the Lady Wildcats competed at the Round Rock Tournament.

ROUND ROCK — The Elgin High School varsity softball team picked up its first three victories of the season Feb. 22-24 as the Lady Wildcats competed at the Round Rock Tournament.

ELGIN LADY WILDCATS 8, LEHMAN LADY LOBOS 0

Behind a dominant pitching effort in the circle from senior Jessica Cantrell, the Lady Wildcats won their first game of the season with an 8-0 shutout over Lehman.

Cantrell helped lead the way with 11 strikeouts and just one hit allowed in four innings pitched, while junior Gabriella Sandoval threw one inning in relief without a run allowed.

Lady Wildcats senior Emily Sumner hit a three-run home run to get Elgin on the board in the bottom of the third inning, while the team also got two runs batted in apiece from senior Mackenzie Farris and sophomore Bianca Galindo. Elgin freshman Jaelyn Barker also drove in a run of her own against the Lady Lobos.

In yet another 8-0 victory last Thursday, the Lady Wildcats cruised as Cantrell threw a no-hitter against Round Rock. Cantrell had 12 strikeouts and allowed just two runners to reach base via a dropped third strike and an error.

Elgin senior Jaylan Roberson was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double to go along with two runs scored and an RBI. The Lady Wildcats also got runs batted in from Cantrell, Farris, Barker and senior Danielle King.

ELGIN LADY WILDCATS 8, STONY POINT LADY TIGERS 1

Following two tough losses Friday to San Antonio Madison High School and Lake Belton High School, the Lady Wildcats ended on a high note Saturday with an 8-1 triumph over Stony Point.

Behind 13 hits as a team, Elgin coasted with a solid pitching performance from Cantrell as she struck out six Lady Tigers in four innings with just two hits allowed. Sandoval also pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

King drove in two runs for the Lady Wildcats and got RBIs from Farris, Roberson, Sumner and Galindo.

Elgin (3-4 overall record), under Head Coach Pete Moreno, is scheduled beginning Feb. 29 to next compete at the Buda Hays Tournament.
