Wildcats thrive at Del Valle meet

DEL VALLE — The Elgin High School boys varsity powerlifting team had a strong performance Saturday, Feb. 24, as the Wildcats won the Del Valle Cardinal Invitational meet after competing in the squat, bench press and deadlift.

The Wildcats took home plenty of hardware back to Elgin with three individual gold medalists, three silver medalists and one fifth-place finisher.

First-place finishers for the Wildcats were Melanio Perez in the 198-pound class with 1,640 total pounds lifted, Miguel Nunez in the 181-pound class with 1,470 total pounds lifted and Alejandro Arroyo in the 165-pound class with 1,340 total pounds lifted.

Second-place finishers for Elgin were Joe Stiggers in the 308-pound class with 1,415 total pounds lifted, Jaydon Sawyer in the 220-pound class with 1,415 total pounds lifted and Omar Palacios in the 181-pound class with 1,310 total pounds lifted.

The Wildcats also had a fifth-place finisher with Jeffery Love in the 242-pound class as he lifted 1,345 total pounds.

Elgin powerlifting is now on to regionals as the girls will host the regional meet March 1-2 while the boys will travel March 9 to Joshua High School.
