Bears baseball opens with two wins

The Bears opened their season with a bang Monday, Feb. 19, as the Bears went on the road and picked up a 12-0 shutout victory over Navarro, in which the team pitched a combined no-hitter.

After Bastrop plated its first two runs of the season in the top of the third inning, the Bears’ offense exploded for nine runs in the fourth frame and tacked on one more insurance run in the fifth inning. Bob Gorman drove in a team-high four runs batted for the Bears while Ben Vaquera, John Dawson, Easton Allen and Braden Davenport each had one RBI apiece.

Vaquera and Abraham each pitched two innings and had six strikeouts apiece, while Dawson came in and struck out two of the three batters he faced.

BASTROP BEARS 3, STEVENS FALCONS 2

A lthough Bast rop dropped its first four games at the Northside Independent School District Tournament, the Bears ended their stay, Feb. 24, on a high note in San Antonio with a 3-2 victory over Stevens.

The Bears got their first two runs of the game in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Abraham and a run-scoring play by Mason Smith to take an early 2-0 lead.

After the Falcons got even at 2-2 in the bottom of the frame, the game was scoreless for the next few innings until Bastrop broke through in the top of the fifth on a clutch RBI single by Francisco Arriaga to take a 3-2 advantage.

Val Regalado started the game on the mound for the Bears and had five strikeouts in 3.2 innings with just two runs allowed, while Abraham did not allow a hit in 1.2 innings pitched and struck out two opposing batters.

Bastrop (2-4 overall record), under Head Coach Daniel Carrillo, is scheduled Feb. 29 through March 1 to next compete at the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD Tournament.
