For a third consecutive year, the Elgin High School girls varsity powerlifting team won the 5A-2 Region 2 championship with nine standout Lady Wildcats headed to the state tournament.
First-place finishers for Elgin were Nya Kirk Jones in the 242-and-over class with 1,345 total pounds lifted, Jordin Seeger in the 148-pound class with 960, Maria Yanez in the 123-pound class with 915 and Elizabeth Nunez in the 114-pound class with 885.
Coming in second place were JaLiyah Price in the 220-pound class with 910 total pounds lifted, Grace Hagen in the 198-pound class with 820 and Deysey Sanchez in the 123-pound class with 710.
Placing third for the Lady Wildcats was Zoey Smith in the 105-pound class with 625 total pounds lifted, while Danielle King also qualified for state in the 148-pound class with 855.
Also competing and placing at regionals for Elgin were Alexia Perez in third, Elise Rhodes in fourth, Mayra Garcia in fifth, Meta Elliot in fifth, Citlalli Jiminez in sixth, Ariyana Alexander in seventh, Katelyn Anderson in eighth, Aurelia Guerrero in eighth, Kiley Kyser in eighth, Regan McFarlin in eighth and Bella Navejas placing 11th.
Elgin, under Head Coach Jacob Rowe, will compete March 16 beginning at 8 a.m. at the 5A small school state meet held at Comerica Center in Frisco.
