Wildcats flex at regional meet

JOSHUA – The Elgin High School boys varsity powerlifting team was in action Saturday, March 9 at the Boys Region 2 Division 1 meet held at Joshua High School. The Wildcats had four lifters qualify for the upcoming state meet in their respective weight classes after competing in the squat, bench press and deadlift.

JOSHUA — The Elgin High School boys varsity powerlifting team was in action Saturday, March 9 at the Boys Region 2 Division 1 meet held at Joshua High School. The Wildcats had four lifters qualify for the upcoming state meet in their respective weight classes after competing in the squat, bench press and deadlift.

Melanio Perez placed second in the 198-pound class with 1,605 total pounds lifted and took home plaques at the regional meet for Most Outstanding Squatter and Most Outstanding Lifter in the heavy platform.

Miguel Nunez was also a runner-up in the 181-pound class with 1,535 total pounds lifted, while Alejandro Arroyo was a bronze medalist in the 165-pound class with 1,455 total pounds lifted. Omar Palacios will also represent the Wildcats in the 181-pound class as he qualified for state in eighth place with 1,350 total pounds lifted.

Also competing for Elgin at the regional meet were Joseph Stiggers placing seventh in the 308-pound class with 1,435 total pounds lifted, Jaydon Sawyer placing 10th in the 220-pound class with 1,390 total pounds lifted and Jeffrey Love placing 12th in the 242-pound class with 1,345 total pounds lifted.

Perez, Nunez, Arroyo and Palacios will next represent Elgin at the Division 1 state meet Saturday, March 23 held at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
