LEANDER — The Elgin High School varsity baseball team was in action March 7-9 at the Leander ISD Tournament hosted by Glenn High School and was highly competitive all weekend.

ELGIN WILDCATS 11, GLENN GRIZZLIES 4

The bats were alive for the Wildcats as Elgin opened the tournament with a convincing 11-4 victory over Leander Glenn High School.

Austin Miller was 4-for-5 at the plate for Elgin and had three runs batted in, while Jalen Owens was 3-for-5 with three RBI of his own. Cason Nalle drove in two runs, while Alex Gamez and Bryce Barron had one RBI apiece in the win over the Grizzlies.

Jack Grames pitched a complete game for the Wildcats as he went 7.0 innings with five strikeouts, four runs allowed and just one walk issued.

LAKE TRAVIS CAVALIERS 1, ELGIN WILDCATS 0

Against 6A Lake Travis High School, the Wildcats hung in there throughout but were edged with a 1-0 loss.

Nathen Lewis was strong on the mound for Elgin as he pitched 6.0 innings with four strikeouts, two walks issued and just one run allowed. The Wildcats had base hits from Lewis, Gamez, Nalle and Barron in the close defeat to the Cavaliers.

MCNEIL MAVERICKS 2, ELGIN WILDCATS 1

Elgin came up just short again to another 6A program as the Wildcats fell 2-1 to Austin Mc-Neil High School as both teams scored their runs in the first inning.

In another pitcher’s duel, Barron led the Wildcats on the mound as he threw 6.0 innings with six strikeouts, two runs allowed and zero walks issued. Gamez and Austin Miller each tallied two hits for Elgin, while Malakai Hibbs drove in the Wildcats’ lone run on a bases-loaded walk.

CEDAR PARK TIMBERWOLVES 6, ELGIN WILDCATS 3

Despite a late rally, the Wildcats were defeated 6-3 by Cedar Park High School. Facing a 6-0 deficit in the fifth inning, the Elgin bats got going. Miller, who went 3-for-3, drove in two of those runs with Barron and Lewis coming in to score.

MCCALLUM KNIGHTS 1, ELGIN WILDCATS 0

The Wildcats played another hard-fought game and ended their time at the Leander ISD Tournament with a 1-0 loss to Austin McCallum High School. Joaquin Rodriguez was strong on the mound for Elgin as he pitched 6.0 innings with just two hits allowed, two walks issued, one strikeout and one opposing runner coming home to score in the first inning.

Elgin (5-11 overall), under Head Coach Jason Bourgeois, was scheduled March 12 to begin 5A-District 23 play on the road at Georgetown East View High School. The Wildcats will be at home Wednesday at 7 p.m. hosting the East View Patriots.
