Winter’s wrath closed out Smithville’s 2022, but utility workers were able to help residents still enjoy the holidays.

The city experienced power outages Dec. 22 and broken water line Dec. 30. Services were restored within the same respective days.

By 3:30 p.m. on the Thursday before Christmas day, city personnel sent an alert to residents that city crews were responding to multiple power outages amid strong winds from a cold front that had just blown through the area.

“City phone lines are being overwhelmed by the number of calls received from citizens reporting power outages,” said municipal staff in a social media post.

A downed line at Seventh and Gresham streets impacted approximately 500 power customers as well as downtown. Traffic lights were out at Loop 230 and Main Street, so a temporary stop sign was placed at the intersection.

By 5 p.m., the downed line was repaired.

“Kudos to the Smithville utility crew for repairing the downed line in 28 degree weather,” said municipal staff.

One week later midafternoon, a water line broke along the north side of Loop 230 East and affected Oak Meadows, Quail Run and Hill Road, leading to low water pressure and and possibly sediment in water lines. Repairs were completed in the early evening hours.

“If this happened or happens, it is recommended that residents run an outside water faucet for 5-10 minutes until the water runs clear,” advised city staff.

The Smithville water/wastewater department, police department WJC Constructors were commended on doing the repairs in less than favorable conditions.
