Hundreds of local readers and community advocates gathered at the Elgin Public Library this past week to celebrate the city’s campaign on youth literacy going mobile.

In commemoration of Read Across America week, with the Friends of Elgin Public Library organization and Elgin Independent School District, library representatives unveiled their new Book Bus. The manuscript-filled mobile will be cruising through the greater Elgin area to distribute free children’s books for the next six months.

The initiative aims to increase availability and access to library services for low-income community members, specifically targeting bilingual and literacy programming, according to library representatives.

The Book Bus is funded through a Texas Methodist Foundation grant that includes support for staff members and permanent books for the library’s collection.

More information about book bus routes and library events can be found at https://www.elgintexas.gov/240/Public-Library.
