CEDAR CREEK — The Elgin High School varsity softball team used an offensive surge and standout pitching Tuesday, March 12 as the Lady Wildcats went on the road and picked up a lopsided 18-1 district win over Cedar Creek High School.

Down 1-0 to the host Lady Eagles in the top of the fourth inning, the Lady Wildcats’ offense got to work with a solo home run by Mackenzie Farris and a two-run homer by fellow senior Jaylan Roberson to take a 3-1 lead.

The Lady Wildcats capped off a seven-run fifth frame thanks to a three-run home run by Roberson and an RBI single by sophomore Trinity Martinez. Elgin then plated eight more runs in the top of the sixth inning highlighted by a three-run homer hit by sophomore Bianca Galindo. Roberson had a team-high five runs batted in, Galindo drove in three runs and sophomore Adriana Sandoval had two RBI of her own.

It was dominance in the circle for Elgin senior pitcher Jessica Cantrell against Cedar Creek as she went six innings, struck out 15 batters, allowed one unearned run and issued zero walks.

As a team, the Lady Wildcats racked up 11 base hits and took advantage of 10 errors committed on defense by the Lady Eagles.

Elgin (9-7 overall, 2-2 in 5A-District 23 play), under Head Coach Pete Moreno, was scheduled March 19 to host Bastrop High School and will travel Friday, March 22 at 7 p.m. to take on Pflugerville High School.
