BASTROP — The Bastrop High School varsity baseball team started 5A-District 23 play with a bang this past week as the Bears defeated the Panthers of Pflugerville High School twice.
BASTROP BEARS 4, PFLUGERVILLE PANTHERS 1
The Bears went on the road March 12 and handled business with a 4-1 victory over Pflugerville in the district opener for both teams.
Bastrop got on the board in the first inning as John Dawson hit an RBI single with two outs to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead.
Tied 1-1 with the Panthers in the fourth frame, the Bears used another two-out rally as Dawson scored on an error and Easton Allen hit an RBI single to put Bastrop up 3-1. The Bears would get another insurance run in the top of the fifth inning as Val Regalado came home to score on an error by a Pflugerville pickoff attempt on the basepaths to make it 4-1.
Allen had a strong outing on the mound for Bastrop as he pitched seven innings, struck out 11 opposing batters, gave up only three hits, issued just two walks and allowed one unearned run to score.
BASTROP BEARS 4, PFLUGERVILLE PANTHERS 3
The Bears won in walkoff fashion March 13 at home in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Pflugerville. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Isaiah Rivas was the hero for Bastrop as he drew a walk to score Dawson. Trailing 3-2 in the sixth frame, the Bears tied the game up on an RBI single by Ben Vaquera as Regalado came home to score.
Regalado got the start on the mound for Bastrop as he pitched 3.2 innings with three strikeouts and three unearned runs allowed, while Sam Abraham pitched 3.1 hitless innings with three strikeouts to pick up the win in relief.
Bastrop (7-12 overall, 2-0 district record), under Head Coach Daniel Carrillo, was scheduled March 19 to host Pflugerville Hendrickson High School and the Bears will travel Friday, March 22 at 7 p.m. to take on the Hawks.
