ABILENE — Elgin High School boys varsity powerlifting team members competed Saturday, March 23 at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Boys Division 1 State Championship meet held at Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.

The Wildcats, under Head Coach Chris Mueller and Assistant Coach Ty Norton, had four lifters compete with senior Melanio Perez, junior Alejandro Arroyo, junior Miguel Nunez and senior Omar Palacios.

“After a great day and a tremendous season, we ended on a good note,” Mueller said. “We PR’ed in lifts, we PR’ed on totals and finished on a good note. That’s a wrap for this year.”

Perez placed sixth out of 40 entries in the 198-pound class with 1,675 total pounds lifted: 675 on the squat, 405 on the bench press and 595 on the deadlift.

Arroyo placed seventh out of 46 entries in the 165-pound class with 1,535 total pounds lifted: 660 on the squat, 375 on the bench press and 500 on the deadlift.

Nunez placed 21st out of 54 entries in the 181-pound class with 1,465 total pounds lifted: 580 on the squat, 360 on the bench press and 525 on the deadlift.

Palacios had an incomplete score in the 181-pound class but lifted 535 pounds on the squat.
